Breaking in

Do you ever get the nagging sense that you're on the outside looking in – at school, at work, at church, in your city, in the world? Somewhere there's a comfortable inner circle – where everyone knows each other, where people know how to dress, what to say, and all the secret important things that are necessary to being happy. It's a place of easy conversations and lingering meals and significance. If you could only get into this special place you could feel complete, whole, truly loved and known. What's the trick? How do you break in?

In this week's segment Bill begins to address this mythical place and the very real challenge of developing community within the church.

C.S. Lewis once said that if you aim for heaven, you get earth thrown in too. Aim for earth, and you get neither. Community, Bill explains, often works the same way: elusive as an end unto itself, but flourishing when "other things are happening." Show up, serve alongside others, seek the renewal of your mind and your neighbor, and you just might find yourself at the center of the community.
