Changing Hearts/Saving Lives

Earlier this fall 13 All Saints members attended the Texas Alliance for Life (TAL) banquet featuring Dr. Richard Land. All Saints member Dr. Mike Love generously provided a table at the banquet, which attracted 1,000 people.  We learned of TALs successful efforts at protecting the life of the unborn. It was a great evening of fellowship, prayer, remembrance, and supplication for the unborn.

Folks at Dr. Love’s table were inspired to learn of the key pieces of legislation that TAL has been successful in passing in Texas. A few of these abortion-reducing laws mentioned by Executive Director Joe Pojman include:
•    Parental notification law (before an under-age daughter has an abortion)
•    Parental consent law
•    Woman’s Right to Know law which informs a woman of the baby’s development while in the womb
•    Prenatal Protection Act which give an unborn child full rights as a human being when a violent crime is committed
•    TAL’s work on strong stem cell legislation supporting adult stem cell research as opposed to destroying human unborn children with embryonic stem cell research

The witty and poignant Land (President of the Southern Baptist
Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission) startled and
informed us with a broader, Christian view of this moral issue. He
noted that 50 million babies have died in their mothers’ wombs since
Roe vs. Wade in 1973. This is a third of all babied conceived—one could
argue the most dangerous place for a child in America is in her
mother’s womb!  Dr. Land traced the historical roots of abortion to
ancient cultures that both supported and opposed the practice.  Some
passages to consider include: Psalm 139, Jeremiah 1:4-5, Luke 1:39-44,
Deut. 30:19, Exodus 20:13 and Exodus 21:22-25.  And Dr. Land also
mentioned that today Christian families are having more children (not
aborting them), thus more young people are learning the truth from
their families. The most pro-life group in America may well be under
the age of 35!

At the end of the program, All Saints members hung around to chat about
how we might be a better force for good and protection of the unborn.
Engaging the culture on this moral issue will take individual and group
effort. Charlie and I have supported TAL since 1993. It is very easy to
become involved and very rewarding.  With our prayers that there is
more to come…..You can find more at texasallianceforlife.org.
